ABOUT SHOTOKAN KARATE
Shotokan is a style of karate developed by Gichin Funakoshi Sensei. Funakoshi Sensei was born in Okinawa and is widely credited with popularizing karate-do through a series of public demonstrations, and by promoting the development of university karate clubs in Japan.
Funakoshi Senei had many students at the university clubs and outside dojos who continued to teach karate after his death in 1957. However, internal disagreements led to the creation of different organisations such as JKA, JKS, etc... although they all bear Funakoshi Sensei's influence.
As the most widely practiced style, Shotokan is considered a traditional and influential form of karate do.
Tyrrelstown Karate Club is affiliated with JKS (Japan Karate Shotorenmei). JKS is one of the leading worldwide karate organisation. The Chief instructor of JKS is Masao Kagawa Shihan. He has reached the highest level of instructor at JKA and has great knowledge and technical skills. These he has shown by reaching all kinds of national and international karate- titles on the Tatami. Sensei Kagawa is seen as the best instructor in Japan, where he is giving all his energy and love for karate in the JKS Honbu Dojo and is leading the national team of JKS. Kagawa Shihan is also councellor for WKF Karate and has played a big part in introducing karate into the olympics in Tokyo 2020.
Our affiliation with JKS offers the opportunities to train with Kagawa Shihan annually in Ireland, as well as other World Class Japanese Instructors.
